Align the base scope
Check that each quote uses the same wall length, retained height, material system, finish, access assumption and project boundary.
Check the hidden work
Compare design, approvals, survey, demolition, excavation, spoil, rock allowance, drainage, outlets, backfill, fencing interfaces, site protection and reinstatement.
Record evidence and exclusions
Ask for the proposed system and exclusions in writing. A lower total may simply place design, drainage, disposal or restoration outside the price.
Compare assumptions before totals
Place wall geometry, access, soil or rock allowance, upper loads, drainage outlet and design inputs at the top of the worksheet. If two providers assumed different retained heights or equipment access, the totals are not yet comparable. Ask each provider to confirm or amend the shared assumptions. Keep provisional items visible and note what investigation or document would convert them into a firm inclusion.
Plan for changes and handover
Ask how a concealed condition is photographed, measured and priced before extra work proceeds. Confirm inspection points before footings, reinforcement or drainage are covered. The handover list can include approved drawings where applicable, product information, inspection or certification records, drainage photos and written maintenance limits. A clear variation and handover process is part of value, even when it is not the cheapest line item.
